To quote the Science Guy: “Science Rules!”

The original poster was surprised that the passengers weren’t barbecued and that the plane didn’t fall out of the sky, but its straight up science!

Remember, as lightning is the movement of electrons from a negatively charged cloud to a positively charged earth, its simply looking for the easiest path down, whether through humid air particles or jetliner. The energy from the lightning passed over the aluminum skin of the airplane and then kept on going right into the ground and I bet that the lights inside didn’t even flicker! This fact is actually a point of concern for the future movement of aircraft to all-composite airframes as they won’t naturally wick the lightning away.

Fun fact: according to this USA Today explainer from 2004, odds are that each airliner in the United States will be hit by lightning about once a year and as of the writing, no crashes had been caused by lightning in over 40 years!

Science Rules! 747 Struck By Lightning

Did we just get rickrolled by the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?

Update:

When I looked to see what was going on this morning, I ran across the press release on the Astley site indicating his appearance, but it wasn’t clear as to how telegraphed it was.

It wasn’t until I saw the video that I knew that we REALLY had been rickrolled! Apparently, the Foster’s imaginary friends people were singing a song from their show, which then stopped and Rick Astley appeared and sang, as he often does.

Link to the video and embed below.

Thanksgiving day rickroll?

Auditorium is an interesting little puzzler centered around music. You need to guide your particle flow into different containers, which fill up to play various parts of the music, using various controls. The various controls push and bend the particle stream and can then be used to complete your objective.

Auditorium = fun game!

Myoung Ho Lee has chosen to work a little differently than we’re used to using canvas in his latest series, “TREE”.

imageInstead of painting on the canvas, he places the canvas behind real life trees in various landscapes. It serves to pull the tree out of its environment and gives us a different look at it.

A different way to work on canvas

So it appears that I’ve stumbled onto a workable flow for my internet findings, just in time for the holidays!

  1. Read many feeds in Feeddemon, use its “Share” feature to generate an RSS feed.
  2. Open up that feed with Google Reader, in order to use its “Share with Notes” feature and add commentary or rewrite the items, then generate a different RSS feed.
  3. Use the FeedWordPress plugin to read the gReader feed and post it to my blog. The plugin automagically checks the feed, then assigns categories to the posts as publishes into WordPress.

The FeedWordPress plugin gives the option to put the new posts in draft state instead of publishing them right away, so I may decide that the Google Reader step is too much and just do the final editing and publishing from the WordPress interface as the Google Reader notes is kind of limiting.

New postings!
